WELCOME
TO MATE
THE FESTIVAL OF MUSIC, ART, TECHNOLOGY AND EDUCATION
Creating an open environment where creativity thrives, MATE makes use of the power of music to connect people, strengthen identities, enhance the sense of community and bring about new and innovative perspectives of the constantly changing world around us. In MATE, three Southern European cities and regions come together to unleash the creative force of their communities and to drive positive change connecting a significant number of people to share experiences and good practices, devise collaborative projects and seek audiences for their products and services.
EUROPE 2023
FROM SOUTH TO SOUTH
SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA
GALIZA
The first stop in MATE Europe will be at Santiago de Compostela, home to NORDESÍA, a company that acts as one of the driving forces of the cultural and creative sectors in Galicia and one of the partners of the MATE consortium. The city was chosen, in 2000, as the European Capital of Culture (ECOC), an event that showcased the profound and permanent cultural significance of Santiago de Compostela.
The ECOC was the culmination of a path that started with the inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage Site list and the recognition of the Way of St. James has the European Cultural Route. Home to one of the oldest Universities in Europe and proud to be a city of creativity.
Santiago de Compostela is perfectly in tune with MATE's overall objectives and will certainly captivate all of the participants that accept our invitation.
THESSALONIKI
GREECE
MATE connects the two geographical southern limits of the European Union and for its second stop MATE travels to the charming city of Thessaloniki, capital of Central Macedonia in Greece. Principal Pro, a company at the center of Thessaloniki’s vibrant art and cultural scene will be the hosts of the event.
The second largest city in Greece, the city is the Balkans biggest university town receiving around 150.000 students per year. With an impressive number of creatives working in research centers, tech and innovation and tourism industry, Thessaloniki built in the last decades a strong reputation as a haven for the Culture and Creative Industries, specially since it was European Capital of Culture in 1997.
Come with us and let MATE guide you in an immersion into the exciting reality of the city’s creative ecosystem.
COIMBRA
PORTUGAL
Coimbra lays at the center of MATE Europe festival. The region is home to two of the four organizations behind the project: the Coimbra Region Intermunicipal Community and Jazz ao Centro Clube. It’s impossible to visit Coimbra without feeling inspired by the urban setting (emerging from the Mondego river) and the multiple historical layers which become visible in several monuments and sites in the historic city centre.
Inscribed in the UNESCO World Heritage list since 2013, Culture and Knowledge are strong dimensions of Coimbra’s identity which should be no surprise since the city is internationally known for its University, the oldest in Portugal and one of the oldest in Europe. Nowadays, the city is experiencing a strong impetus drived by culture and creativity.
MATE aims to provide new possibilities of development in this renewed path.
