Synopsis/Author Biography:

“BAYAN,” a Persian word meaning “Expression,” is the name of a group created by Iranian musicians Sharif Tavakoli and Sina Shirazi. The band aims to extract ancient Persian melodies, infusing them with new color and style.

Sharif Tavakoli, a seasoned vocalist, vocal coach, composer, and lyricist, brings to the group his Persian instrument, the Setar, and his poetry. With a strong background in traditional Persian singing and extensive teaching experience, Sharif enriches the group with his deep understanding of Persian music.

Sina Shirazi, a remarkable Flamenco Guitar player, has over 15 years of professional experience in Iran, Spain, and Chile. His journey encompasses Flamenco, Jazz, South American folk, and Middle Eastern music. Recently, his focus on the Microtonal guitar, Charango, and Ney Amban has opened new horizons, allowing him to collaborate across diverse genres. Currently based in Portugal, Sina is working on solo projects with his Microtonal guitar, crafting a musical language that transcends borders.

Joining them are Roham Torabi on Persian percussion and Luati González on Iberian and South American percussion. Together, the four members of BAYAN offer a journey from ancient Persia, enriched with the flavors of Iberian flamenco and South America. They seek to highlight the similarities in expression among these cultures, encapsulated in the word “BAYAN.”

Project Description:

The project of BAYAN ensemble is a musical exploration that bridges ancient Persian melodies with contemporary influences from flamenco and South American music. By blending these diverse traditions, the band creates a unique sound that respects the roots of each genre while forging new artistic pathways.

Sharif Tavakoli, with his mastery of traditional Persian singing and the Setar, brings a deep sense of history and poetry to the group. Sina Shirazi, through his expertise in flamenco and microtonal guitar, along with the Charango and Ney Anban, adds a rich, multicultural dimension to the music. Roham Torabi’s skills in Persian percussion and Luati González’s proficiency in Iberian and South American percussion provide the rhythmic backbone that ties these elements together.

The band’s performances are not just concerts; they are cultural journeys that connect audiences with the shared human experience of expression through music. BAYAN aims to show how different musical traditions can harmonize to create something new and beautiful, emphasizing the universal language of music
